Abstract: Basic ideas and concepts of spatial data mining will be discussed in this speech. Employing several real-life examples in spatial and temporal pattern recognitions, climate dynamics, and hydrological processes, objectives and fundamental concepts of spatial data mining will be examined. Particular attention will be paid to the problem of spatial and temporal scales, as well as data quality such as the existence of noise and impure distributions. Novel methods will be introduced for effective and efficient data mining in large spatial databases. The speech will be concluded with outlooks for future research.
