Advancing spatial and spatio-temporal data analysis: reflections from the BIAS II project

Abstract:  I have been collaborating, since 2008 in BIAS II (Bayesian methods for combining multiple Individual and Aggregate data Sources in observational studies), a project funded by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and based at Imperial College, London. BIAS II is a node of the ESRC's National Centre for Research Methods.

The two main aims of the BIAS projects, the first of which (BIAS I) started in 2005, are: (i) to develop statistical frameworks for combining data from multiple sources; (ii) improve the capacity of social science methods to handle the complexities of observational data. For further details see www.bias-project.org.uk

The project has both a training programme, that includes short courses and the development of training materials, and a research programme that includes the development and application of new methodologies for the spatial and spatio-temporal modelling of small area data.
This address will briefly describe aspects of the training programme and will illustrate the research programme with examples drawn from geographical epidemiology and geographical criminology drawing on my personal participation in both programmes of work.
