Abstract:
GIS industry in China started from the 1980s. Four development stages can be found: fundamental academic research and development of pilot systems; early GIS applications in urban planning and land management; independently developed GIS software platforms; and finally a complete industry chain consists of GIS platform development, application development, data production and extensive applications. According to the statistics announced by State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the geospatial industry is developing with unprecedented speed, and has already expanded annually by more than twenty-five percent with the total sales of nearly one hundred billion Chinese Yuan by the end of 2010 , and more than four hundred thousand persons working in the industry. New geospatial companies are created almost every day in China now. It is expected that by the end of 2015 the total sales of geospatial industry will be over two hundred billion Chinese Yuan.
Until now, between GIS development platform and GIS applications, the R&D of GIS application platform which can meet the common needs of various industries is booming. With the assistance of GIS application platform, the development work could be greatly reduced, the cost saved and the efficiency increased for the application developers who will be more competitive. With the launch of the Internet maps from international IT giants and the participation of domestic telecom companies, location based service and other public geographic information service is growing fast. The Chinese public GIS service has a broad application potential as geospatial industry is becoming a new economic growth engine of Chinese modern service industry.
